H.I.S Home For Children is an Interdenominational Christian ministry that was developed to care for orphaned and abandoned children in Haiti.
Hal and Chris Nungester founded the non-profit organization in 1999, and minister under the leadership of a Board of Directors comprised of Christian leaders from Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Georgia and New York. H.I.S Home For Children is funded entirely through charitable contributions.
Hal & Chris were married in 1974 and have raised six children. They also recently completed their adoption of a sibling set of three Haitian children. Kaliah Berline, Kaleb Michael, and Kristen Felineta, officially joined the Nungester clan on January 7, 2011. Hal, who has an MBA and is working on his doctorate in Ministry, is a licensed pastor, and has worked in youth ministry as well as the business community. He is currently the Administrator at Morningstar Christian Academy in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti to help financially support the work at H.I.S. Home. Chris, who has an MSW, spent 10 years as a Paramedic in Emergency Medicine and was a Licensed Social Worker with an emphasis in child welfare. Chris oversees the daily activities at H.I.S Home, using her experience in mothering, social work, and medicine to nurture the children.
The Nungesters and 33 full-time staff members administer three homes with approximately 125 kids and maintain a waiting list of needy children. Boys and girls range in ages from birth to 16. While some of the children are orphans, many have been abandoned to the home by a single parent who is unable to provide for them due to extreme poverty. Most of the children come with medical conditions resulting from years of malnutrition, but improve quickly with three nutritious meals a day, vitamins, necessary medicines, and purified drinking water.
